3D Print Guide
You can print multi-colored objects even with a single extruder by swapping the filament at a specific layer. The base is printed in one color, and everything that stands out above it in a second color.
- Generate the model and export it to STL.
- Open the STL in your slicer and slice it.
- In the layer preview, find the first layer above the base (where the raised details start).
- Add a filament change (PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, Bambu Studio: the + next to the layer slider; Cura: Extensions → Post Processing → Filament Change).
- Print. The printer pauses at that layer so you can load the second filament, then continues.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What size should a coaster be?
- Most coasters are 90 to 110 mm wide and 3 to 5 mm thick. 100 mm fits nearly every mug and glass. Turn on the mug in the preview to check.
- Which filament should I use?
- PLA works for cold drinks. For hot mugs, PETG or ASA is better, because PLA can soften above 55 °C. A cork pad on the underside also insulates the table.
- How do I print a multi-color coaster?
- Choose "Inlay" as print style and enable "Separate parts" before exporting. Load all parts in your slicer as one object and give each part its own filament. With a single nozzle, use "Raised" and add a filament change at the first layer above the coaster.
- How do I add cork or felt to the underside?
- Choose "Cork" under Underside and cut a cork sheet to the shape of the recess. The recess has to be printed face up as a bridge, so it works best with "Print face down" (engraved or inlay). Rubber feet pockets print fine either way.
- Can I use my own logo or photo?
- Yes. Upload an SVG (used as it is) or a PNG or JPG: the image is traced automatically and you can adjust the threshold. High-contrast images with clear shapes work best.
- What happens when I share a design?
- Your coaster goes into the public gallery with its name, thumbnail and settings, so others can open, like and remix it. You do not need an account; your browser remembers your designs, so you can delete them later.
- Which file formats can I export?
- STL files (binary or ASCII) for 3D printing, and PNG images with a transparent background for previews.
